Greek Labyrinths
Jan Bajtlik
September 22 - November 10, 2017
Jan Bajtlik’s show Greek Labyrinths encompasses fifteen works chosen from a cycle of twenty-five plates dedicated to Greek myths, in particular to motives borrowed from Iliad and Odyssey. Pencil drawings with numerous elements reveal a masterful composition reflecting artist’s rich experience as an illustrator and referring to the original character of myths as a narrative. The cycle was created as a result of the author’s longstanding fascination with the Greek antiquity and visual abundance of labyrinth imagery as a symbol, metaphor and formal challenge in regard to composition of an artwork. The notion of labyrinth recurs in each presented picture and these appearances show a vast variety of representations and meanings originated in Greek antiquity that remind about their strong impact in the context of contemporary art and Jan Bajtlik’s work.
