Agitated Unfocused Inactivity

Luka Rayski

May 7  –  June 17, 2022

‘Agitated Unfocused Inactivity’ corresponds to a state of restlessness and distraction. In Anglo-Saxon psychological terminology, it appears in the context of attention deficit disorder. Although this technical term may sound contradictory, it is indeed applied to individual cases of treatment. Furthermore, it can provide the key to understand the jumbled and ambivalent feelings afflicting individual people, and enhacing the moods of entire social groups.

In his latest series of abstract paintings, Luka Rayski creates sequences, or even entire systems of rhythmically formed small elements. He follows his own method to painterly write down the unknowns that are graphically represented by the sign "x". Each small cross connects with the other, weaving a web of mystery. The background is apparently monochromatic and seemingly uniform. Through the curvatures in the grid of Xs, and the colors that delicately intertwine – reminiscent of pulsating afterimage patches – the picture seems to vibrate in gentle waves: the background ceases to be merely a support. It becomes an abstract reality in the process, whose disintegration is prevented by a lining woven from hundreds of lines.

‘Agitated Unfocused Inactivity’ is a story about a world that has been explored and tamed only on the surface, while in its depths something lurks that is easier to feel than to describe.
